On the 70th anniversary of President Eisenhower's historic visit to Skowhegan, we invite national security experts Susan Eisenhower and John Lauder for a thoughtful conversation about the historical context behind today's war in Ukraine, America's relationship with Russia and regional concerns involving conventional and nuclear weapons. In this critical moment, we ask the same questions Ike and Sen. Smith wrestled with 70 years ago: is there a chance for peace?
Susan Eisenhower is founding director and chairman emerita of the Eisenhower Institute at Gettysburg College, and granddaughter of President Dwight D. Eisenhower. She is a well-respected policy analyst in the areas of national security, leadership, and non-proliferation in Russia.
John Lauder is an internationally-recognized authority on arms control, weapons of mass destruction, and the verification of nonproliferation agreements. A Hiram College alumnus, he spent 35 years in government service, notably as the Director of the Intelligence Community's Nonproliferation Center and Arms Control Intelligence Staff.
